TitleThe emergence of symbolically mediated behavior. Towards a new synthesis.

The identification of the earliest evidence of symbolic material culture and the processes that may have led members of our species to develop such behavior is one of the more lively debated subjects of Paleoanthropology. I will summarize the evidence from Africa and Europe building on twenty years research on this topic, and show that the emergence of this unique adaptation is explained by a model involving multiple, discontinuous cultural trajectories.

TitleBeauty and the Beads: what can we learn from 100 000 years of personal ornaments?

Dr. Vanhaeren’s is a researcher at the French Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) based at the Bordeaux University (UMR 5199 PACEA) and specialised in the study of ancient beads. She has worked on the oldest personal ornaments in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, aiming to characterise ancient symbolic expressions, social structures and inequalities, exchange networks and ethnocultural diversity of prehistoric populations. To make the tiny prehistoric beads "talk", she uses technological and taphonomical analyses, modern, fossil, experimental and ethnoarchaeological reference collections, microscopy, databases, GIS and statistical tools. Her presentation will focus on the social function of personal ornaments in traditional societies and illustrate, through three case studies (Blombos Cave in South Africa, Aurignacian beads in Europe and grave goods from the Magdalenian Saint-Germain-la-Rivière burial), how the study of ancient personal ornaments can provide new insights into prehistoric societies.
